Meaning and Importance of Salvation

Salvation is a word that fills the human heart with hope.

It stands for freedom from sin and death, the forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, new life in Him who is everlasting life, and eternal fellowship with God to know His peace and love.

What is Salvation According to the Bible

In simple terms, salvation is our ticket to eternity in Heaven.

More specifically, salvation is the deliverance (saving) from sin and its consequences (death).

But what does the Bible say about salvation? What is the scripture for salvation? Some refer to Romans 10:9-10 as the Salvation Bible verse.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10 NIV

Here are some additional bible verses about salvation to help you understand it from a biblical perspective.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 – God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
  • Acts 16:30-31 – He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
  • Acts 4:12 – Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
  • John 5:24 – Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
  • Matthew 19:25-26 – When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

How is Salvation Achieved

How do we achieve salvation? Simple. We ask God to come into our hearts and fill us with His spirit.

Salvation is achieved when one accepts Jesus Christ’s payment for his/her sins willingly because he knows they are unable to save themselves without His help.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10 NIV

Some people believe that they can achieve salvation through good works here on Earth. But salvation isn’t something we can earn or buy – Jesus already paid the price for our salvation when He died on the cross (and rose again three days later).

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

Of course, once you accept Jesus into your heart, you will naturally want to do good works here on Earth because that what Jesus did when He walked among us. But the works themselves are not the ticket into Heaven.

Salvation is a free gift. God has done everything for us and we can’t earn it or buy it ourselves. We must simply believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to pay our sin debt, rose from the dead three days later, and conquered death so that eternal life was now within reach.

Why is Salvation so Important for Christians?

As Christians, we seek to be close to and have a relationship with God. And we seek to spend eternity with Him in Heaven.

But we are born sinners and sin separates us from God. And the consequence of sin is (eternal) death. But through Salvation, we accept and receive the free gift of eternity in Heaven. Without salvation, we would be lost forever.

The Benefits of Salvation

While salvation is a requirement for eternity in Heaven, there are so many other benefits that we, as Christians, enjoy as a result of fully submitting our lives to Christ:

1 We Are Saved

Although we are born sinners into this world, salvation saves us from our sinful nature. When Judgement Day comes, we will be safe from the rapture that awaits those who chose not to follow Jesus.

“He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him, we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us,” 2 Corinthians 1:20

2 We Know God Personally

Knowing “of” God is not the same of truly knowing Him. Salvation enables us to have a deeper, close relationship with the Father.

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3

When we have this kind of intimate relationship with Him, we can hear Him speak to us – and He hears us when we call out to Him.

3 We Are Adopted into God’s Family

When we accept Jesus into our hearts, we are immediately welcomed into His family. As a child of God, we are heirs to the Kingdom of God!

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. – Romans 8:17

4 We Are No Longer Subject to God’s Wrath

God hates sinners and we are born a sinner. The consequence of sin is death. But when we accept Jesus into our hearts, we are, in that moment, forgiven of our sins and exept from the coming wrath of God.

and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. 1 Thessalonians 1:10

5 We Are Reconciled to God

When we recite the Salvation prayer, we are basically offering an apology to God for our past sinful nature. Being reconciled to God is like having a truce between two opposing sides. God has no more animosity towards us for our past sins.

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19

6 We Are Made New

Salvation offers us the chance to be made new in Christ! When we choose to follow Jesus, we get a fresh start. Our past is forgiven. We shed our old selves and begin to live fully in Christ.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

The Salvation Prayer

While some may think salvation requires some formal, perfect prayer, asking Jesus into your heart is actually quite simple. And there is no one “right” prayer to recite. But there are some basic things you’ll want to include in it (in no particular order):

  1. Ask God for Forgiveness
  2. Acknowledge that Jesus died for our sins and rose again
  3. Ask God to come into your heart and be your Lord and Savior.

This is the Salvation Prayer that my church recites with those wanting to accept Jesus into their hearts. We, as a congregation, say this out loud as show of support and encouragement to those saying it for the first time:

“Dear Jesus, I realize I need you. I believe you died for my sins and I believe you rose again. I ask you to come into my heart. Be my Lord and be my Savior. I repent of my sins and I put you in first place. Thank You for saving me. Amen.”

See how simple that was? Again, this is just one way to do it. There is no need to memorize it (unless it helps you to do so). The Salvation Prayer can be as simple as telling God that you believe in Him, that you repent of your sinful ways, and that you wish to follow Him from this point forward.
